Reality defined

Just like the beloved Don Quixote when he proclaims, “I know who I am,” all of us carry many possibilities of enacting different roles not only throughout a lifetime but also in one day.  Descartes defined his reality when he announced, “I think, therefore I am.”  Michael Douglas, as Charlie in King of California, explained that sometimes he does not know if he “exists.”  Reality surprises us.

Reality is a kaleidoscope.  Reality runs.  Changes.  Stops.  Reality disorients us.  Disappoints us.  Angers us.  Blinds us.  Reality embraces us.  Caresses us.  Seduces us.  Quiets us.  Reality is artificial and organic. Simultaneously, it is ethereal. Reality moves according to who chases it with their hands.

Reality is a concert with nature.  It is music.  It is a thunderous night and a warm breezy day.  Reality is the grey rocks that punctuate the emerald Irish landscape and the exposed yellow rocks of the summer-rivers of Maine and the dark washed cliffs of Iguazú falls.  It is the cry of the fox at night or the call of the owl at dawn.  It is the reality of a happy dog when one arrives home or the purr of a cat being loved.

Reality opens herself to us as we open ourselves to her.  It is the love that expands and metamorphosizes with the passing of time.  Reality is an eternal search.

Reality is a mayfly that lives for only one day, and the heart of a hummingbird that beats up to 1,260 times each minute.  A Galapagos tortoise can live more than 100 years and a redwood tree can live 800 years; a talipot palm flowers only once near the end of its 80 year life.  Elephants mourn their dead and alpha-wolves mate for life.  Reality is a chameleon that changes colors like the capricious leaves of a New England autumn.

  1. This was very eye opening. Reality is so different for each person and is sometimes so shocking. Something that would be strange or unnatural to us, might be another being’s reality. Reality cannot be just defined as one thing and you did a great job showing how it changes depending on who’s it is.

  2. Oh wow. Just wow. This is so refreshing. Right now I feel full of energy and just like I really needed to do something. Something more, than I was doing until now. I don´t wanna be so indifferent to the things that surround me. Actually is really nice to see how our reality can change us. Because sometimes we do the opposite of than we want to do. So I am glad that you made me to realize this and I am glad that in many cases, all of us have our Sancho Panza and with him is realize much better and luckier. When I start read this I can´t even imagine how much big influence it would have on me. And for this I want to thank you. So now on I get up from the couch and I am going to determine my own reality. Wish me luck.

    1. I am beaming right now! I wish you the best!! Do let us all know how you define your reality. We’ll all be waiting for an update now. Please let us know what you create! And, yes, good luck, though I suspect, with your energy and enthusiasm, you don’t really need it. I imagine you already have the drive and creativity to do what you need to to accomplish what you set out to do.

  3. What is reality? Where can I find it? How it looks like? Why is here with us? I think that, for every person that term or word means something a little different. I think that, the reality is something quite ordinary but even something completely different whether it’s action, love, disappointed, moments, events or life choices and changes. The reality is one, is here now and will be with us and gives us his presence felt full. Regardless of age, sex, race or status in society. It is same merciless to all without exception. And it is up to us how we fight with it, or what we will do. I think that, to explain what is reality is quite a difficult task even for talented people who are facing these issues and work with them. I think that the reason is simple. The reality is quite variable and each has a different influence, impact and everyone dreams come across in their own way. And since we could not find a bottom in the world of the very same people we just talk about it, philosophize and think about it like trying this me. What do you think? What is your opinion on this difficult question? How do you fight with this question you?

    1. What a fantastic comment! The line that really resonated with me is, «it is merciless to all without exception, and it is up to us to decide how we will fight it or what we will do.» I was nervous when my students assigned this word to me this year, as I am often so saddened by the reality of the sorrow and suffering in life. I think, though, having this as my «word lens» I’ve also become more aware of forcing myself to also seek out news of human kindness and beauty, even within tragic events. I certainly haven’t come close to mastering this, but I do know I am more aware of working to center myself more than I have in the past. Thank you very much for taking the time to comment on our blog. My students are feeling very inspired by all of the comments.

  4. Reality is something too complicated for summary in some qote. I read so much articles about explaining of reality and it was just wasting of my time. We can have as many views at reality as you want. But I learn one thing. Reality is not what you can see, it´s not what you can feel, it´s not things you can touch. Reality is just a word and it´s our choise what it will mean, but onley for us. It´s like music. I don´t sever between good and bad music. I sever between music I like and i don´t.
Reality is like religion. It´s up to you if you thing it exist and what dou yout thing abput it. Take 10 other people and ask them what does reallity means for them, and I can tell you, thel will say the same thing like people around us.
One little idea on the end. If you thing this will help to anybody, or someone will care what reallity in normal day, a can tell you answer. No, nobody will thing about reallity in factory. And why? Easy. Nobody care about things like this. Nobody who woud like to do something productive.

  5. Very nice definition of reality. Everybody have your own subjective reality, but objective reality is only one. I think that, most important for good life are dreams and plans, because people who have not this important values they have not happy life. They usually do not know what want yet. Everybody perceived reality otherwise and it is very interesting because do not exist two same human beings. Another important thinks, which influences perception reality are environment and of course society. For example, people who live in poor African countries perceived reality completely different like people who live in rich European or American countries. Family and friends are very important for good lifetime. At present is objective reality on the world distorted with mainstream media. If He said your opinion, and this opinion disagreement with mainstream He is denoted like madman or the conspirator. Anyone should have your own worldview.
PS: I am sorry for my bad English.

    1. You need not apologize for your English. It is easily understood (meaning I don’t feel the need to have to interpret much), and you wrote an articulate, thoughtful response. I agree with you that our reality is very much influenced by time and place and circumstance. I’ve been so lucky to have traveled quite a bit, and I’m always interested in how I change (and how my perceptions of things change) when I’m somewhere new. I also think about this when I teach certain literature. I had a professor from Spain once talk about the reality of dreams (the ones that occur in our sleep). I remember him stating, «even our dreams are real. They have time and place.» I share this with my students when we talk about how dreams can leave you feeling a certain way all day and that is very real.

  6. I agree with you that find “definition“ for Reality is very hard mission and every single person has his own definition or feelings how Reality looks like. But I am afraid that people in these days very slowly loosing their definition. Where is the problem? I think the biggest problem is currently technology and how we use them. Especially young people are something out of reality when they use their smartphones in every part of the day. I have no problem with aplikations like Facebook, Instagram etc. it is great aplikation to share your pictures with your friends, when you are on holiday. But if someone spends half of the day by checking new posts and comments I think it is very sad and they have no idea what reality really is. So I think that term Reality has bad attribute and it is virtual and we need to limit it and live real life.

    1. I agree with you! This week both of my children (ages 11 years old and 8 years old) had a mandatory screen free week for school and home. It was wonderful! My friends and family often complain that I am never on Facebook (which is very true…I think I get on a few times a year at best), but I find that I just want to disconnect when I get home. I don’t want to sit in front of a screen. I hope that people read your comments and think about how they are spending their time. I’d love to see more people less connected virtually and more connected face to face. Thank you for your insights.

  7. What is reality? It is hard to say but we can maybe say that reality is subjective view of things around us. As much as the people is so much potential and existing realities. Each of us certainly at least once presented his perfect reality without wars, natural disasters or incurable diseases and other horrors that afflict us. But in this perfect world, we can not stay long, eventually you still have to go back to reality and face these pitfalls. Now the question is if we want to live in a reality where reigns fear, envy and worry from this what will happen or we rise and we will try to change it because as I said the reality is not only one, constantly changing and depends on each of us how. It is sad that on the world, in my opinion, only a few people who are trying to do something for changed some things.

  8. What is reality? Reality is defined as something that is real, what exists. But what is really true? For example, tree, flower, animal, snow, all this is true, we can touch it, but how about the wind? Wind feel to touch it but can not find him, so is it reality? What about feelings such as love, happiness, friendship, grief, it is regarded as a reality? For example, we all feel like the wind, but you can not touch it. We do not know if it is real, but for most people as more real than the love of a car, a flower and other things. I think that reality is for each of us to do something else, after all, everyone sees the world differently.

  9. It is an awesome article and I really wish that one day I can write English articles as well as you do. Reality is like what we feel when we are on the cliff facing a boundless grassland. Too far to reach and too enormous to control, although we are facing it all the time. I really like the way you describe the reality is like “the purr of a cat being loved”. Maybe because I have a cat and I just love the movements when he is sleeping on my leg. Hopefully the cat feels the same way. But the reality is, I might never get to understand my cat, and he does not understand what I am typing either.
