Romanticism

Romanticism was a movement that focused on nature. People who study romanticism think nature is the most important thing. In romantic literature, language is very descriptive. These are usually very dark pieces of literature. This is why they can  sometimes be seen as «scary stories.» Some popular romantic writers are Poe, Hawthorne, and Becquer. All their writing revolves around darkness and the natural world.

This image shows a mother protecting  her children from Somali militants. This was during an attack in which over 70 people died. It took place in a shopping center in Kenya. It relates to romanticism, because it is very dark in nature. It has to do with a dark theme, like in the stories of romantic authors. These are issues that many people do not want to think about, but are very real. This image shows how the mother is censoring her children from what is out there. She did not want them to see all the people who have died. She also wants to protect them from dying. In “La Rosa de Pasión»» by Becquer, Sara is censured by her father to believe only in Judaism. This story can also be compared to the cruelty shown in the image with the Daniel’s actions.“Daniel, ciego de furor, se arrojó sobre la hermosa hebrea y derribándola en tierra y asiéndola por los cabellos” (Bécquer, “La Rosa de Pasión”). The darkness and the death of many people shown in the picture is seen throughout all romantic literature.  “She was dead!” (Poe, “The Oval Portrait”).  In telling the legend of the mountain of the souls, Becquer used dark descriptions, “Fue una batalla espantosa: el monte quedó sembrado de de cadáveres” (Bécquer, “El Monte de las Ánimas”). Both romanticism and the image here represent the darkness of human nature.
