I thank my father for insisting that I study Spanish because it was his wish that inspired me to live in Spain, Mexico, Chile (and Italy, yes, Italy where I also studied Spanish at the Università di Firenze). I thanked him and reminded him how loved he was/is recently before saying good-bye to him. Le doy gracias a Melchor, «mi padre mexicano» de San Cristobal de los Ranchos, Guanajuato, México. Me enseñó lo que signfica dedicarse a la familia y lo que signfica querer a los demás. Me cuidó durante mi estancia con su familia y sus hijas y mi «mamá» me trataron con cariño. En el verano de 1989, regresé a Connecticut después de pasar varias semanas con ellos y los llevaba conmigo en el corazón. Ha sido un otoño difícil para mí. Melchor se falleció el 25 septiembre de 2019 y dejó un vacío en el corazón de muchos.
I thank Melchor, my «Mexican father» from San Cristobal de los Ranchos, Guanajuato, México. He taught me what it means to dedicate yourself to family and what it means to love. In the sumer of 1989, I returned to Connecticut after having spent a month with them. I carried them with me in my heart. It has been a difficult fall. Melchor died on September 25, 2019. He left a hole in the heart of many.
Y, por último, le quiero agradecer a Phyllis Hildebrandt. Tenía gran corazón y les trataba a todo el mundo como si fueran las personas más importantes en el universo a cualquier momento. La conocí cuando tenía once o doce años y su marido, Bill, otro gran hombre, nos casó a mi y a mi marido. Phyllis enriqueció la vida de todos que la conocieron. And, lastly, I want to thank Phyllis Hildebrandt. She had a great heart and she treated everyone as if they were the most important people in the universe at any given moment.
